Usability Evaluation:

Analyze an existing web site, intranet or next-generation designs. Identify usability gaps and suggest improvements based upon web standards and user/audience needs.

What does this mean?

Organizations are beginning to realize that information overload confuses web site users, and ultimately costs money. Usability guru Jakob Nielsen says, "If users can't find what they are looking for, they will leave; if employees can't find what they need, productivity goes down the drain."

An independent review of your web site will often discover usability issues that may not be apparent to those close to the project.

All too often web developers design and implement solutions based upon their needs and understanding. Unfortunately, the majority of web users do not have this same level of knowledge.

User Experience Design:

Coordinate information architects, graphic designers, content authors, programmers and HTML developers to shape user experience of web sites and intranets.

What does this mean?

Too often organizations place more focus on their own needs during the web development process. Lost in the process is the web user.

"User-centered design" is the process of placing users' needs in the forefront of development process. The term "design" can be misleading since many think of visual design. Our role is to focus on the information design.

With a broad skillset we can easily communicate the users' needs to designers, programmers and content authors.

How Much?

Budgeting for Information Architecture and Usability

Budgeting for information architecture and usability services can prove to be a challenge. Ten to fifteen percent (10-15%) of the total project budget is a good estimate.

Those not familiar with the importance of information architecture and usability will dismiss the idea quickly. But would you rather spend an extra ten-fifteen percent now or another 100% in a year because you need to overhaul a poorly planned site that confuses users and employees?
