Search Tools Selection & Integration:
Select and implement search solutions for internets/intranets. This initially includes: software selection, meta-data creation, relevance and synonyms. After implementation periodic reviews are conducted to adjust relevance and synonyms.
What does this mean?
Many web users are lazy; rather than utilizing the navigation of your site, if a search tool is available the will rely upon it instead. How effective is your search solution? Are users quickly and easily able to find the information they are looking for?
The creation of meta-data and synonyms can greatly increase the effectiveness of your search system. What are synonyms? Just like the literal definition, they are relationships between words that have similar meanings. Most search tools utilize a keyword index to search your site; synonyms can help.
For example, your site may contain travel information with a list of hotels. It would be nice if a user who searched for words such as 'lodging' or 'motels' were directed to 'Hotels.' Synonyms and meta-data allow you to provide results to users who search for words/terms which may not exactly match your content.
